ChondroFiller® liquid is a collagen implant made from purified animal collagen, as described in the published literature. It is injected as a liquid and sets firm within minutes, forming a collagen scaffold in the damaged area. The manufacturer describes it as a resorbable implant that gives your own cells a framework to move into.

ChondroFiller® liquid is used to fill cartilage damage in joints such as the knee, hip, shoulder and ankle, following the manufacturer’s intended use.8

Whether it is an option for your joint is a decision for the surgeon who examines you and looks at your scans. The published studies cover the knee, hip and ankle, with follow-up of one to five years.2,4,7

    A surgeon assesses your joint, your history and your scans, and discusses whether ChondroFiller is worth considering for you.

  2. Step 02

    Decision with the surgeon

    You and your surgeon decide together whether to go ahead. Clinics set their own fees; ask the clinic.

  3. Step 03

    Treatment

    ChondroFiller is injected into the damaged area of cartilage and sets firm within minutes, forming a collagen scaffold. Depending on the joint and your surgeon, it is given as an ultrasound-guided injection without surgery, or during keyhole (arthroscopic) surgery.

  4. Step 04

    Recovery and follow-up

    Your surgeon will talk you through aftercare and arrange follow-up.

What the studies found

The published evidence, in plain English.

The published research on ChondroFiller liquid consists of small studies, mostly single-arm, followed for between one and five years, with two series extending to five years or more. Results vary between studies and no large UK trial has been published. Ask a clinic what the evidence means for your own joint.4,5,6,7,2

The manufacturer states: 'In rare cases, hypersensitivity reactions to collagen such as allergic or inflammatory reactions can occur.' No adverse events were reported in the published multicentre trial of 23 randomised patients, 13 of whom received ChondroFiller. If you notice anything you are concerned about after treatment, contact the clinic that treated you.8,2
